New York joins other states in enacting a law that will help women be more informed about their breast health. I am hoping to see more states follow suit!
STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo (D-N.Y.) has signed legislation requiring mammography services to inform patients if dense breast tissue is found during an exam.Under the new law, mammography providers will be required to include a notification in the summary of the mammography’s report if dense tissue is found. The report is provided to both patient and doctor. The notification will explain “dense breast tissue is very common and is not abnormal. However, dense breast tissue can make it harder to find cancer on a mammogram and may also be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer,” according to statement from Gov. Cuomo’s office.Women can use this additional information to talk with their doctor about their risks.
